Trend: Traditions and Classics
The global economic situation has not unwound enough for significant relief to be felt in Milan. Caution and uncertainty still dominate the attitude of people.
Under these conditions, undisputed authorities in the world of design that have achieved their standing through fame, success and decades of recognition create security. Citations, re-editions, remakes of design classics and homage to the big names determine this phase of orientation. Designs by Eileen Gray and Charlotte Perriand, for example, are thus being reproduced. This also explains the popularity of living legends and current design stars. One example is the classic armchair by Magistretti, which is re-interpreted here by Mendini with the colorful diamond pattern – an ode to Memphis from the '80s.
In this context, France’s Philippe Starck takes on a special role. In Milan, he again presented products reminiscent of the baroque. For two decades he has been asserting his own style with all designs and thus fills a position that can only be compared to that of Karl Lagerfeld in the fashion industry.
