Exhibition: "Airworld" in Weil am Rhein
The Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein has been showing the exhibition "Airworld – Design and Architecture for Air Travel" since May 15, 2004. The entire world of aviation design will be presented until January 9, 2005 – from the corporate design of the airlines to the uniforms of the flight attendants.
Aviation has developed its own world of aesthetics. Airport architecture, airplane interiors, corporate design of the airlines, uniform fashion, and on-board tableware – the exhibition sheds light on all of these sectors. The technological development of airplane seats is documented, from simple wicker chairs to seats made of aluminium and magnesium tubing with plastic-shell seats to today's high-tech seats in the first class compartment. A retrospective of the Lufthansa on-board tableware from 1955 to the present shows products from ranging from plastic to porcelain.
Airlines employ the services of famous designers when it comes to giving their corporate design a contemporary look. Among others, the exhibition shows the clear corporate design of Lufthansa, which was designed by Otl Aicher and the development group 5 of the Ulm Design School in 1962. Many logos of the international airlines are known worldwide today, but hardly anybody knows the designers and graphic designers behind them. The Airworld exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the designers who created these logos.
This retrospective and the outlook on visionary products of the future also trace the history of air travel, which at first was an adventurous and exclusive pleasure of the rich and famous and today has almost become an everyday means of transportation for the masses.
Accompanying the exhibition, the Vitra Design Museum has organized a workshop to be given by Marc Velten, Manager of Advanced Design at EADS within the framework of its summer academy in France from August 29 to September 4, 2004. The participants will develop a project on the subject "Cabin design of passenger airplanes".
