Trend: Materials

New technologies that are discovered for use in the lamp sector present a challenge for both designers and manufactures. Often, the new is approached in a playful manner in order to get to know it during use and application. The catchword is trial and error. Quite a few designs result from this creative approach, and an innovation is finally given the stamp of approval. If the application proves of value, the new trend is defined.

This playful approach to technologies and materials was also revealed in Frankfurt. From flexible lighting tracks and filigree wrappings to the innovative use of LEDs – no limits were established for fantasy. Unusual designs like lampshades made of wafer thin ceramic foam lined up with lamps made of chrome and steel. The silver gloss generally has a comeback in the materials of 2004 and reminds us of the eighties – a trend that Professor Dr. Peter Zec and Elmar Schüller already noticed at the Milan Furniture Fair.
