Exhibition: Marc Newson in Groningen
The Groninger Museum, Groningen, the Netherlands, presents a major retrospective of the works of designer Marc Newson until September 5, 2004.
Futuristic, sexy and humoristic – that's how the designs of the Australian designer are described. Originally a graduate in jewelry and sculpture from the College of Arts in Sydney, Newson has become what can only be called an all-round designer. His objects range from household objects, clocks and furniture to complete interiors and cars. The exhibition consists of about 300 works by the designer, among them 93 prototypes, special editions and single copies. Original sketches are being exhibited, as well.
Marc Newson first became famous with his "Lockheed Lounge", a futuristic looking sofa reminiscent of the classic chaise lounge, which he designed in 1986. Newson's designs have been added to the collections of the Vitra Design Museum, MoMA, New York, SFMOMA, San Francisco, and the London Design Museum, among others. He currently works in London and Paris.
