Thonet Showroom in Düsseldorf
The new Thonet showroom officially opened on July 8, 2004. Among the guests was James Irvine, who designed the "Loop Chair" A660 for Thonet.
Felix Thonet is the director of the showroom. He is a member of the 6th generation of Tonets of the family-owned company Gebrüder Thonet, which gained fame throughout the world as a result of the innovative bentwood technique of the company founder, Michael Thonet (since 1819), and later through the tubular steel classics (since 1928).
The entire product range is presented in the showroom – from the coffee house chair 214 to the tubular steel classics by Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer, to current designs by Norman Foster. The A660 by James Irvine, the so-called "Loop Chair", a slender, comfortable chair with an unmistakable silhouette, which totally banks on the pure effect of the materials – bentwood, aluminium and mesh – is also on display. "The design combines the tradition and warmth of wood with the lightness and comfort of modern materials," says James Irvine. That's what makes the design a representative Thonet product. " As the basis, the loop is well suited for creating a chair. I wanted it to be flexible enough to 'feel well' in various locations", says the designer.
What began with the invention of the bentwood technique in the 19th century was continued with the production of the first tubular steel furniture and consistently led up to the present, where the search for compelling forms in furniture design, which is characteristic for Thonet, is continued together with contemporary designers.
