World Umbrella Organisations for Design looking for joint location
The decision will be made in the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen
From 3 to 5 August 2004, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen will host a meeting of the boards of the world umbrella organisations for design, ICSID (industrial design) and Icograda (graphic design), during which design history will be made. The international umbrella organisations are looking for a new, joint location in order to better coordinate their activities in the future.
In response to an open announcement, 36 cities from all over the world applied to host the joint office of ICSID and Icograda for the following ten years. Six of those are still in the running: Brussels, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Montreal, Nagoya and Turin. These cities are now sending delegations to Essen to represent their respective home town in front of a committee of six, consisting of three ICSID and three Icograda board members. “It will be a neck and neck race”, predicted Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, the President of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and as designated ICSID president a member of the selection committee. “The finalists will fight, because as the future home town of the world umbrella organisations of design, they will have the attention of the design world and also economic opportunities.”
The town of Essen also knows about the significance of the meeting. The programme for the delegates of the applying cities and the boards of the umbrella organisations includes a reception by the Mayor, Dr. Wolfgang Reiniger.
Since the beginning of this year, ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) has a temporary office in the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen. Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations) still has its headquarters in Brussels. The search for a joint location has become necessary, because both associations, each of which represents more than 1,000 designers, intend to co-operate more closely in projects in the future.
