Symposium "Plastics – past and present" in Weil am Rhein

The 4th symposium about plastics restoration will take place on November 24 and 25, 2004 under the title "Plastics – past and present." The AXA Art Conservation Project in cooperation with the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein have organized the event.

From Niki de Saint Phalle to Verner Panton: plastics have been used for decades in art and design. Little is known about the decomposition process of plastics – only the fact that plastics decompose much more quickly than other materials is certain. The goal of the cooperation between AXA and the Vitra Design Museum is a concise development of new technologies for the conservation and restoration of plastic objects. Guidelines and recommendations about the handling of plastic objects for gallery owners, museums, shipping companies and plastics manufacturers will also be drawn up. The results will be presented during the symposium.

There will be 4 focal themes during the two days: the history of plastics and world of plastic damages, an insurer will speak about the conservation of value, examples and solutions in art and restoration, and the visit to restoration and production workshops, among others a foaming shop.
