The patience of some 1,000 designers, entrepreneurs and design enthusiasts from all around the world was tried last Friday night at the presentation of prizes of the ‘red dot award: communication design’ in the Essen Philharmonic Concert Hall. For almost two hours they waited for the moment, when the two main prize-winners of the competition were announced.


When the time came, the nominees were visibly excited and proud at the same time. The relieving words were then spoken by Professor Dr. Peter Zec as the initiator of the red dot design award and head of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen: “… and the winners are: The ‘red dot: junior prize’ for the best student work in the competition goes to Daniel Janssen and his ‘Save your face!’ film. And the ‘red dot: grand prix’ for the best of the total of 2,936 submitted works goes to the American design agency Segura Inc. for its ‘Crop’ catalogue series.” The two prize-winners visibly enjoyed their great appearance in front of the gathered communication design trade as well as receiving their cheques on stage. The junior prize is worth Euro 2,500 and has been sponsored by the AGD (Alliance of German Designers). The winner of the ‘red dot: grand prix’ receives a prize-money of Euro 10,000, which this year has been sponsored by the Essen-based Allianz insurance agency Krenzler Graf Biermann.

Also at the opening of the ‘red dot award: communication design 2004’ special exhibition, which followed the presentation of prizes, and the ‘Late Night Party’ in the red dot design museum, Segura and Janssen continued to be in the centre of attention and were celebrated into the small hours. Carlos Segura: “It is a great honour to receive the highest distinction in one of the most significant design competitions of our trade.”

Further nominees of the ‘red dot: grand prix’ were Heye & Partner from Unterhaching, Germany, for their advertising campaign ‘Wörlitz – Ein Hort der Toleranz’ (Wörlitz – a stronghold of tolerance) and Jäger & Jäger from Überlingen, Germany, for their exhibition design ‘Wer’s glaubt wird selig?’ (Blessed are the believers?). Nicholas Markwald and Nina Neusitzer from Wuppertal as well as Niels Schrader from Amsterdam competed with Daniel Janssen for the ‘red dot: junior prize’.

In total, 198 of the 2,936 submitted works received the ‘red dot’ quality label for high design quality and another 31 received the ‘red dot: best of the best’ for highest design quality.

This year, the ‘red dot: digital media’ has been announced for the first time. This prize will be awarded to the best work among all entries in the field of digital media. This includes works of the multimedia category such as web-sites and CD-ROMs, but also computer graphics and computer animations, trailers and TV-spots. The winner is the interactive installation ‘floating numbers’, which was created by the Art+Com design studio for a special exhibition of the Jewish Museum in Berlin.

The ‘red dot award: communication design 2004’ special exhibition, which presents all the competition’s prize-winning works, is running until 9 January 2005 in the red dot design museum.

Winner red dot: grand prix:

Catalogue series „CROP”, Segura Inc.

“CROP” is a large format product catalogue series for the client Corbis Stock Photography. There have been seven produced to date as part of a re-branding effort. The catalogues include an extraordinary amount of different papers, printing techniques and varied content, all in specially produced packaging. Founder and principal of the design company Segura Inc. is Carlos Segura, who is also the creative director of the “CROP” catalogues. After working for more than a decade in several prominent agencies such as HCM Marsteller, Young & Rubicam, DDB Needham or BBDO, both in Pittsburgh and Chicago, Carlos decided to pursue a more creative approach to design by founding his own firm in 1991.


Winner red dot: junior prize:

„Save your face!”, Daniel Janssen

The film “Save your face!” is a fictitious commercial with social content for Amnesty International. Brutal war scenes are displayed in sequence. A soldier is decorated with medals for his “merits”. With each medal, a piece of him disappears until he loses his face. The violent war scenes are enhanced by the effect of air-brushed stencils. The distorted background song,

“Amazing Grace” only adds to the oppressive atmosphere. The jury was very impressed: “The winner of the red dot: junior prize has won our unbounded recognition for this amazing work. The precise, dramaturgical and unambiguous statement of the film leaves you breathless. The senselessness of war cannot be presented in a clearer way.” Daniel Janssen, born in 1973, worked as a professional engraver in Düsseldorf and has been studying communication design at the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (University of Applied Sciences) in Hamburg since 2000. The film is his studio work for one semester. In addition to his studies, Janssen is working in the fields of print design, type design, and screen design at his own design office.
