red dot goes to Dubai – red dot strengthens its profile in the Arab world

The red dot design award is presented at a special exhibition in the „red dot on tour“ range in the Arab world for the very first time. The venue is the Madinat Jumeirah hotel in Dubai, which will host the first International Design Forum (IDF) from 27th to 29th May 2007. red dot is a partner of the organiser Moutamarat, an Arabian company that also founded the International Design Initiative (IDI), and as such, would like to play a part in strengthening the role of design as an economic factor in the Arab world, as well as actively promoting resident designers, and also building up its own profile in the Arab world.

Design expert Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award and president of the international governing body of industry designers, Icsid, will play an important role within the congress. He has been invited to talk on the topics „Design As An Economic Factor”, „Design Institutions“ and „Design For A Global World“. Alongside other designers and experts in architecture, such as Karim Rashid (Product designer, USA), Zaha Hadid (Architect, Great Britain), Stefano Boeri (Editor of Domus, Italy) or Rem Koolhaas (Architect, from the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, The Netherlands), Zec belongs to the advisory board of this first forum which focuses on design in the Arab and global context.

Zec states: „The Arab world is being confronted with substantial economic changes- not least through the settlement of new industries like the aerospace industry, for example. Design will play a key role in the course of this development. Design in the Arab world will represent a considerable challenge for the future: just as this can already be observed in architecture, design will need to be integrated into the most varied paths of life and economic areas, and be combined with other disciplines like architecture, town planning or IT. Zec explains that a fundamental part of this is to develop a funded international and competitive design training programme in this part of the world.
