Icon of the fashion world: Dato' Professor Jimmy Choo makes his debut as a red dot juror in 2013
With its origins dating back until the 1950s, the red dot design award ranks among the largest design competitions in the world. More than 15,000 applications from 70 nations – in 2012 alone – document its international influence and reputation. In 2013 a jury of renowned experts is once again in search of the best products and projects of the year. Among them Dato’ Professor Jimmy Choo, who will make his debut as a red dot juror in 2013 and enrich the expert panel with his know-how regarding fashion.
Mention “Jimmy Choo”, and elegant, exquisitely crafted shoes immediately come to mind. Famed for making designs for the Late Diana, Princess of Wales, Dato' Professor Jimmy Choo’s beautiful creations have by now adorned the feet of royalty, celebrities and pop stars around the world; they embody glamour and style.
Choo, who descends from a Malaysian shoemaker family, learned the craft from his father. He studied at Cordwainers College, which is today part of the famous London College of Fashion. At the end of the 1980s, he founded his own couture label. With success: Jimmy Choo’s hand-made designs secured him very notable, steady customers.
In 1996, building upon his already strong presence in Britain and his growing international reputation, he launched his ready-to-wear line “Jimmy Choo” with the late Tom Yeardye. Today, 150 stores in 32 countries distribute the luxurious high heels with their red carpet look. After selling his shares of his company in November 2001, he continued focusing on his couture line. For his merits in fashion, Jimmy Choo was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II.: she bestowed him with the “Officer of the Order of the British Empire“ title.
With his excellent expertise in shoe design, Choo now spends his time supporting and promoting design education. He is Ambassador for Footwear Education at the London College of Fashion and a spokesperson for the British Council in their promotion of British Education to foreign students. Additionally, in 2013 he will contribute to the judging of the “red dot award: product design” for the first time. Together with another 37 international design experts, the dedicated shoe designer will select the best products of the year and decide on what is state-of-the-art in fashion.
This year, manufacturers, designers, architects and planners from around the world have again entered thousands of works in 19 different categories of the “red dot award: product design”. True to the motto “In search of excellence”, it is now up to the red dot expert panel to test, discuss and evaluate each single entry. In a process taking place over several days, the jurors will select the best works live and on site, taking various criteria into account, such as degree of innovation, formal quality or the emotional and symbolic content, to name but a few.
Dato’ Professor Jimmy Choo will examine all entries in the category “Fashion, lifestyle and accessories” together with red dot experienced design professional Vivian Wai-kwan Cheng (Hong Kong) and fashion designer Marcell von Berlin as well as other design experts. With their expertise and their fair and competent judgement, they will decide who receives the coveted red dot, the quality seal for aesthetic forms and lasting trends.
All honorees will be officially announced at the red dot gala on 1 July 2013. On this evening, the international design scene looks at the Aalto-Theater, the glamorous opera house in Essen, Germany, where the awards ceremony will be celebrated in the presence of more than 1,200 guests from around the world.
