Yesterday evening marked the high point of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013. More than 1,200 international guests celebrated the winners of the worldwide renowned competition in the Aalto-Theater. The Red Dot Gala took place on 1 July in Essen’s opera house for the 20th time. After the glamorous award ceremony, the Designers‘ Night party in the Red Dot Design Museum went on well into the early hours. The evening also marked the opening of two Red Dot special exhibitions.
Red Dot Gala
With his able charm, Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the Red Dot, hosted the Red Dot Gala – traditionally held in English – and honoured the best names in the industry with the Red Dot Trophy on the evening which was presented in its new design for the first time. Jewellery designer Günter Wermekes gave the symbol for the highest award in the competition a whole new look.
The globally acclaimed shoe designer Datuk' Prof. Jimmy Choo OBE was a jury member and an on-stage guest for the first time this year. Together with Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, he handed over the trophies to the winners.
In 2013, designers, architects and companies from 54 countries submitted almost 4,700 of their best products in 19 different categories. The panel of experts awarded the Red Dot for excellent product design to a total of 1,065 products and the Honourable Mention for especially refined detail solutions to 205 products. The Red Dot: Best of the Best, the highest award in the competition, was given to 53 happy prize winners on stage at the Aalto-Theater.
The 2013 prize for Red Dot: Design Team of the Year went to Lenovo. The computer manufacturer was honoured for its distinctive and multi award winning design language at a consistently high level. “Lenovo is a company with an international gearing, a strong in-house design department and an intensive and courageous focus on quality“, explained Prof. Dr. Peter Zec. In his laudatory speech, The US-American industrial designer Gordon Bruce made it quite clear that the prize was going to a deserving winner.
There was a modern and thrilling cultural entertainment programme, with the popular trio “Wildes Holz” winning over the audience with their wild and funny cover versions played on classical wood-based instruments in the beginning of the gala. The Aalto Ballett Theater Essen also gave an impressive performance of the expressive dance piece “Deca Dance“ – a composition of various pieces by the Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin.
Designers‘ Night & Winners‘ Exhibition
Success should be celebrated, which is why after the glamorous award ceremony the Red Dot Design Museum opened its doors for the legendary Designers’ Night. Essen’s star DJ Chrissi D! provided the dance beats to get the guests on their feet at the aftershow party – the former boiler house of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex was “boiling over“ until the early hours.
The evening also saw the opening of two winning exhibitions in the Red Dot Design Museum: the Winners‘ Exhibition “Design on Stage“ presents all of the winning designs in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013. All of the objects on show won the sought-after Red Dot seal of quality after a selection process by the Red Dot jury – comprising a total of 37 international design experts – that lasted several days.
The exhibition of the Lenovo Design & User Experience Team “Communication+“ shows how the development of Lenovo‘s design language is shaped by its very own design philosophy. It presents a selection of award winning products by the design team of the year that aim to demonstrate how these have developed further over time in order to meet the constantly rising requirements and desires of the market. Both exhibitions will be on show in the Red Dot Design Museum until 28 July 2013.
There was also another very special first on the evening, as the 1st of July marked the start of two new digital media: the global design directory Red Dot 21 (www.red-dot-21.com) and the official Red Dot App, which provides information on design and trends anytime and anywhere.
