Night at the Red Dot Design Museum: Free torch tour for families

On Saturday, 23 November 2013, well-shaped exhibits will come to new life – at night in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen. From 7 – 8 p.m., young and old will go on a discovery tour in the former boiler house of Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. Equipped with torches only, the free guided tour of a special kind will become an experience for the whole family.

What are Swedish chain saws doing in the dark? And does the gyrocopter, which is pending from the ceiling, fly in the house under the cover of night? Completely in darkness, in the midst of old industrial architecture, mysterious hallways and secret corners, about 2,000 exhibits wait for being discovered and standing in the spotlight. Is the silhouette which appears in the glow of a torch a chair or something else? And what does the shadow play of the vacuum cleaner remind one of?

When the night closes in, children and their parents experience – with keen senses – award-winning everyday items in a new way. During the one hour lasting tour, they will find out what characterises good design, how different things feel when you can’t see them and which exciting stories the design objects tell.

Since the Red Dot Design Museums presents design to touch, there are no limits for the joy of discovery on five floors and approximately 4,000 square meters: many of the products from around the world can be tested and appear in a different light in the glow of torches. That is why young and old will learn to see their surrounding with different eyes during the discovery tour.

As the group size allows for a maximum of 25 participants, the Red Dot Design Museum kindly asks for previous registration by phone on +49 (0)201-301040 or via e-mail to museum(at)
