Designs with a story – in the exhibition „Every Product Tells a Story“
The American entrepreneur Henry Ford once said: “Every object tells a story, if you know how to read it.” Inspired by this quote, the exhibition “Every Product Tells a Story” grants exciting peeks behind the scenes of design and shows how award-winning design is characterised. Until 31 May 2015, visitors of the HKDI Gallery in Hong Kong can experience the exemplarily selection of designs from various living environments and discover what is hidden under the surface.
Product design is more than the appearance of an everyday object. Creative ideas, a targeted planning and the careful development are equally important when it comes to creating a product which can meet the market successfully. Until an idea manifests in a final product, it takes a long process of development in which many drafts arise and are reviewed. But where do these ideas come from? What motivates designers and manufacturers to create products which change our lives?
“Every Product Tells a Story” explores these questions in detail and tells the stories which lie behind the presented objects. The exhibition gives designers a voice and provides visitors with fascinating insights into the creative process and the consequential design idea. Moreover, it becomes apparent to what extent the awarded examples comply with user requirements and fulfil functional aspects.
The exhibition, which was designed by the renowned interior designer Cheng Chung Yao from Taiwan, is a cooperation between the Red Dot Design Museum Essen and the Hong Kong Design Institute. “Every Product Tells a Story” is accompanied by an extensive exhibition catalogue which features all sources of inspiration in detail and contrasts the products with examples.
