International Design Politics in Essen

New Home of the Global Design Society ICSID at the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen

Last weekend, the board of the global design society ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) unanimously decided during a meeting to move the ICSID office to Essen and to the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. The meeting took place on January 17 and 19, 2004 at the red dot design museum of the Design Zentrum. Before, the domicile of the office was in Helsinki.

Under the leadership of the acting ICSID President, Luigi Ferrara, from Canada, the board and eleven renowned design experts from Canada, the United States, Sweden, Chile, Italy, England, South Africa and Germany gave their vote. The office in Essen will function as an interim solution for an indefinite period of time. The society will be looking for a permanent residence; it will house the ICSID as well as the newly founded cooperation, International Design Alliance (IDA), and for joint projects with Icograda, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations.

The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen thus continues to expand its internationality. "We are very pleased and honored to be entrusted with this important task," said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, longstanding Director of the Design Zentrum NRW and President Elect of the ICSID. Professor Zec will take office as ICSID president in the year 2005.

As a non-profit global umbrella organization of design associations, the ICSID unites about 150 member organizations from more than 50 nations and reaches approximately 150,000 experts. The ICSID is composed of numerous leading companies, internationally active designers, design schools and sponsoring organizations. The society has been an independent non-profit organization since its foundation in 1957 and is dedicated to the promotion of industrial design on an international level. Its goal is to promote the social, cultural and industrial importance of design as well as quality-oriented and globally recognized training and specific professional development.
