Christmas shopping in another way: charity auction in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen
Since 2011, it is a fixed item on the agenda of the Red Dot Design Museum Essen: the auction for the benefit of Amnesty International. This year, on 15 December, numerous international exhibits will go under the hammer again. All those who are still looking for fancy Christmas presents could make a find at this shopping event of a special kind.
Among the well-shaped everyday items which Vito Orazhem, Managing Director of the Design Zentrum NRW, traditionally auctions off in the Advent season, is the elegant firewood basket “RAIS Carry II” by Danish manufacturer RAIS. The home accessory made of aluminium features an ergonomic, nature-inspired design and also fascinates with its lightness. Moreover, participants can bid for the chair “MUSE”. The furniture by Shiang Ye Industrial from Taiwan can be used in the interior as well as outdoor. Height-adjustable legs allow for a highest degree of optimal seating comfort for the user as well as a solid positioning on uneven underground.
Another highlight is “Minibeat”, a vibration speaker by Chinese manufacturer Cowin Electronics. The portable Bluetooth device does not only have a chic appearance but also thought-out technology: it transfers the tone to any surface it stands on and thus offers a rich sound for a speaker of this size. From a multifunctional buggy to an ergonomic torch to kitchen appliances and a sewing machine – the bidders can look forward to about 120 well-shaped items. The Design Zentrum NRW sells many of them at a starting prize of 1 euro.
In 2013 again, the complete proceeds without deductions will be donated to Amnesty International. The non-profit organisation internationally takes a stand for human rights as well as for personal freedom, which is regarded as the basis for human creativity by Red Dot. Last year, the entertaining charity event generated 5,165 euros. This record is to be broken in 2013 for the good cause.
Shortly prior to the auction, design enthusiasts and all those who want to become it can get an overview of the fascinating everyday objects from various product fields: on 15 December 2013 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Those who already discover their favourite piece can earmark their interest in single lots.
All of the products which can be purchased by auction were entered in the Red Dot Award: Product Design, one of the most renowned design competitions in the world. With about 2,000 exhibits, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen presents the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design – and always stays up to date: After one year, most of the objects are sent back to their manufacturers in order to clear space for the arrival of the new Red Dot Award-winning products. But on the third Sunday in Advent, numerous top products go under the hammer for a good cause.
Since the number of participants is limited, all those who are interested in attending the auction are asked to register until 14 December 2013 at www.red-dot.de/auktion2013 or until 15 December 2013, 12.30 p.m., at the reception of the Red Dot Design Museum. Participating in the auction is for free.
